"Vardaris" is hosted once again in the latest issue of the top "New In Chess" magazine 01/2019.

Vardaris, for yet another time, unites the Balkan chess players.

So this year, during the 5th International Chess Tournament "Vardaris", the Chess Club SACH of Thessaloniki will proceed to brotherhood with "ETAR" Chess Club of Veliko Tarnovo in Bulgaria.

Few information for “ETAR”...

Established in May 2010 in Veliko Tarnovo, that is the old Bulgarian capital with long traditions in chess. In this beautiful town, in 1927 was established one of the first chess clubs in Bulgaria and one year later the Bulgarian chess union.

President of Chess club “Etar” is Nikolay Yordanov, who is National master, Internarional arbiter, FIDE trainer and organizer of the many chess tournaments of different levels.

Svetla Yordanova, who is also a trainer has the title of WIM (Woman International Master) and Woman National Champion.

The club’s headquarters is sports center “Ivaylo”, that was fully renovated 4 years ago.

In 2013, Etar Chess Club, with the help of the Municipality of Veliko Tarnovo, organized Veliko Tarnovo’s chess holidays – with more than 100 participations from 10 different countries.

ETAR collaborates with chess clubs from Skopje, Bucharest and now Thessaloniki.

We are delighted to announce the participation of Grandmaster Francisco Vallejo Pons in the 5th International Chess Tournament "Vardaris", which will take place in Thessaloniki from March 7th to March 11th.

It is a huge success of "Vardaris" organizers and not only. The participation of this top Spanish chess player in an open tournament in our country is a great success for the chess of the city of Thessaloniki, but also for the entire chess events in Greece. It is extremely rare to observe chess players of this level to be at the table next to you. So, we are expecting this great opportunity with great joy and impatience!

On this day in 1982, the great Grandmaster Francisco Vallejo Pons was born in Es Castell, Spain.

Vallejo Pons is 5 times Champion of Spain.

He won the title of Grandmaster at the age of 16 years and 9 months.

In 2000 he won the World Youth Championship under 18.

In 2013 he was ranked first in the European Individual Championship.

His highest ELO was 2724 in June 2011 that raised him up in the 18th place of the world.
